Winter Training Success in the Midlands

Midland Optimist Team volunteers are delighted with the success of their winter open training events.  Thirty one sailors turned out for the latest event held at Staunton Harold Sailing Club in January.  This may not sound impressive in comparison to the numbers enjoyed elsewhere particularly the larger clubs in the South, but it is a significant number for MOT compared to recent years.

Chris Brown, MOT Training Officer commented “It is brilliant that so many sailors have had such an excellent days training and racing.  I am really grateful to the sailors and the coaches for making it happen.  Of course the parents and the club volunteers should be thanked for their part in this too.”

The lead coach, Chris Witty, was particularly impressed by the progress that the sailors have made in their starting during the training.  Chris noted, “With more than thirty boats on a deliberately short start line it was possible to mimic the usual competition for space that the sailors face in the bigger events.  I am really pleased that many of the sailors showed such good skills in boat handling and getting good starts.”

There were coaches prizes awarded to the sailors who had shown outstanding performance or attitude during the training and there were also prizes for the top three sailors from the afternoon’s three back to back races.  The coaches prizes went to Connie Hicklin, Mark Powell, Martha Rhodes and Matt Rhodes.

It was definitely a day for more of the girls to take the lead in the races as Sarah Alton was the overall event winner with two race wins out of three giving her 2 points after discard, closely followed by Ella Stoggall with a 2nd and 3rd places to count and then Ben Haynes with a 5th and a race win.

Sarah commented “I have had a great day.  The coaching session this morning really set me up for some good racing this afternoon and it was fantastic fun.”

The weather was also a key factor in the success of the day as despite the torrential rains and squally winds of the previous few days, the sun shone and a steady breeze gave near perfect sailing conditions.
